"BROTHER TO BROTHER is a
project that I have been working
on for the past 6 years",
revealed 33 year old
Writer/Director Rodney Evans.
"The idea for the script began
when I started to think about
different present day experien-
ces that I was having from a
larger historical perspective.
This led to my research into the

"BROTHER TO BROTHER" is a feature-length
narrative drama invoking the glory days of the
Harlem Renaissance through the memories
of Bruce Nugent, co-founder of the
revolutionary literary journal
Fire!, with
Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and
Wallace Thurman.

As an elderly man, Nugent meets a young
black gay artist struggling to find his voice.
Together they embark on a surreal narrative
journey through his inspiring past.

Schomburg Library in Harlem.""I learned that
Niggeratti Manor  was the creative center for literary
figures such as
Langston Hughes, Bruce Nugent and
Zora Neale Hurston in the early stages of their
careers. I conducted several interviews with Thomas
Wirth, a scholar of African-American literature, who
gave me access to over thirty hours of taped interviews
with Bruce Nugent and an anthology of Bruce's art and
writing."

"The film draws parallels between the early phase of
Bruce's life and the contemporary struggles of the
younger, fictional character, Perry, who as a young,
gay, African-American artist has to grapple with similar
issues of racism and homophobia in the present-day
culture.  The evolution of the relationship between
Bruce and Perry, runs parallel to the rise and fall of the
Niggeratti and the Harlem Renaissance. It presents
the lives and experiences of well known writers who
are read throughout the world, and brings wider
recognition to lesser known but equally important
figures. he film strives to acknowledge the diversity
and complexity within the African-American and gay
and lesbian communities and to give voice to
experiences that have been vastly underrepresented
in cinema for far too long."
In his library research for a class project, Perry
finds a book about the Harlem Renaissance and
recognizes a poem ("Smoke, Lilies and
Jade" by Bruce Nugent).  Bruce is now living in
the homeless shelter, where Perry works and as
fate would have it, Perry recognizes the name.
He confronts Bruce about who he is and begins
to ask him about the Harlem Renaissance.
Although the house is now dilapidated, you
will be transported through the landscape of
Bruce's memories of the glory days, in which
Perry learns about the lives and personalities
of Wallace Thurman, Langston Hughes, Zora
Neale Hurston and Aaron Douglas, and sees
how they became a surrogate family for
Bruce.

Perry begins to recognize this era as his
history. He sees the pride that Bruce exudes
from those times in terms of being Black, gay
and unashamed. Bruce's pride and
self-esteem begin to have an empowering
effect on Perry as he gains a stronger sense
of his own identity.

Anthony Mackie who stars in Spike Lee's hit
film, "She Hate Me" released earlier this year,
looks years younger, as Perry.  But according
to Writer/Director Rodney Evans "Brother to
Brother is
Mackie's first film. We shot about
six months before She Hate Me started."
They go on a literal
and metaphorical
journey to the
house that was
known as
"Niggeratti Manor",
the creative center
for the revolutionary
journal "FIRE"

Renaissance

Anthony Mackie as (Perry) in "Brother to Brother"
After being found in an intimate, sexual
encounter in his home with another young
man by his father, Perry is thrown out of the
house by his family, and told he is no longer
worthy to be their son.

Perry struggles to hold on by working in a
homeless shelter and to maintain his
college scholarship, all awhile, he is haunted
by his homosexuality and becomes
increasingly withdrawn.

Ten years ago, some of the worst atrocities
in the history of mankind took place in the

almost unnoticed by the rest of the world.

"Issues" is a vital

March 25th - GUESS WHO Is Bernie Mac
Jackson remembers the story of Ken Carter.

"I remember being shocked that a coach was actually
sacrificing winning to make his kid go to class,"
Jackson said.

"That's not the story we normally read. We always hear
about the guys who cut corners, or hire tutors. As long
as they're winning, nobody cares how they do in the
classroom and how they'll carry on with the rest of their
lives."

Inspired by a true-life story, "Coach Carter" is an
inspirational account of a controversial high school
basketball coach, who received both high praise and
staunch criticism when he made national news in
1999 for benching his entire undefeated basketball
team for poor academic performance.

The real-life Coach Ken Carter of Richmond,
California, says "Several of my 1999 team members
went on to earn 4-year athletic scholarships, including
my own son Damien who was awarded a full
scholarship to West Point Military Academy.

Cast includes

Rob Brown, Debbi Morgan and Ashanti.
